The Jones Haywood School of Dance (JSHD) is formerly known as the Jones Haywood School of Ballet (JHSB). JHSB was founded in 1941, and has a significant history of service and longstanding commitment to the children of Washington, D.C. JHSB’s founders, Doris Jones and Claire Haywood believed that all children deserved the opportunity to benefit from classical dance instruction. With this belief, they founded a dance school expressly for serving minority children when such an institution was unheard of at the time. Although hampered by many obstacles, relocations, and hardships, JHSB survived – and thrived!
Now under a new Administration and a new name, the Jones Haywood School of Dance (JHSD) currently enrolls over 85 students from across the metropolitan Washington, D.C. area.
JHSD’s curriculum is unique and diverse, offering its students a wide variety of dance instruction, including Classical Ballet, Modern Techniques, Tap, Hip-Hop, and African dance; and exposes its students to dance performers of various ethnic cultures, hence allowing the children to learn about themselves and gain a healthy understanding of others.
The JHSD owner and artistic director is Sandra Fortune-Green.
